Self-worth

Reflections on Cultivating Self Worth: My Journey and Insights

Self-worth has deeply resonated with me throughout my journey as a therapist and an individual. It goes beyond being just a professional interest and has become a personal quest. Through my work and life, I have encountered many people, including myself, struggling with the question of self-worth. Cultivating self-worth is not just an outcome of therapy but an ongoing, deeply personal process. Here, I share reflections and insights that have shaped my understanding of self-worth, hoping they resonate with you as you navigate your own journey.

5 Reflections That Have Shaped My Understanding Of Self-Worth

1.Self-worth is about recognising and accepting our intrinsic value, irrespective of our achievements or the opinions of others. It is an inner sense of being valuable simply because we exist. This distinction became clear to me through my own experiences and my clients. True self-worth lies beyond external markers; it is about embracing our inherent worth as individuals.

2. Recognising the pervasive impact of negative self-talk was a pivotal moment in my journey. Techniques like cognitive restructuring have been invaluable in challenging these internal dialogues. This shift in perspective can significantly alter our internal narrative, replacing self-criticism with self-compassion.

3. Appreciating the critical role of boundaries in cultivating self-worth has been transformative. It has helped me and my clients protect our emotional and mental well-being. Self-compassion has been a cornerstone in my personal and professional development, leading to greater resilience and emotional well-being.

4. Surrounding oneself with nurturing, uplifting individuals is crucial, as positive, supportive relationships can bolster our self-worth. Celebrating our strengths and achievements is vital, as recognising and building on our strengths can enhance our overall well-being and sense of self-worth.

5. Engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfilment is essential in cultivating self-worth. This journey is deeply personal and ongoing and requires self-reflection, compassion, and a willingness to challenge long-held beliefs about oneself.

I hope these reflections resonate with you and offer guidance as you embrace your inherent worth.
