Self Esteem and 4 Ways to Boost It

Self-esteem is how much we value and perceive ourselves. It’s based on our opinions and beliefs about ourselves, which also is closely linked to self-worth (how worthy we feel) and self-confidence (how capable we feel in our ability to do something).

Here’s how it affects you:

Self-Value: How you regard yourself matters. Recognising your inherent worth lays the foundation for healthy relationships, career success, and personal fulfilment. When you value yourself, you’re more likely to attract positive experiences and opportunities into your life. Cultivating self-value fosters resilience in the face of challenges and enables you to pursue your goals with confidence and conviction.

Assertiveness: Can you speak up for yourself? Assertiveness empowers you to communicate your needs, set boundaries, and advocate for your interests. It fosters mutual respect in relationships and prevents resentment from building up. Assertive individuals tend to experience less stress and enjoy greater satisfaction in their interactions. By honing assertiveness skills, you assert your value and assert your right to be treated with respect and dignity.

Strength Recognition: Acknowledging your capabilities. Identifying and celebrating your strengths boosts confidence and resilience. When you recognize what you’re good at, you approach challenges with a sense of competence and optimism. This self-awareness enables you to leverage your talents effectively, whether in your career, hobbies, or personal goals. Recognizing your strengths reaffirms your value and competence, fostering a positive self-image and empowering you to pursue your aspirations.

Courage to Explore: Trying new endeavours. Embracing new experiences expands your horizons and fuels personal growth. Stepping out of your comfort zone builds confidence and self-assurance as you discover your capabilities and resilience. Each new endeavour, whether successful or not, contributes to your sense of self-efficacy and adaptability. By embracing new challenges, you cultivate resilience and self-assurance, proving to yourself that you are capable of growth and achievement.

Self-Kindness: Treating yourself with compassion. Cultivating self-compassion involves extending the same kindness and understanding to yourself as you would to a friend facing challenges. This practice reduces self-criticism and fosters a nurturing inner dialogue, promoting emotional well-being and resilience in the face of adversity. By practicing self-kindness, you nurture a positive relationship with yourself, fostering self-esteem and inner peace. This self-compassion allows you to navigate life’s ups and downs with resilience and grace.

Let’s embark on a journey of self-discovery and positivity! Set aside some quality time to yourself and grab your journal…

Here are 4 practical ways you can boost your self-esteem:

  1. List Your Good Qualities: Identify at least ten positive attributes. If you’re not sure, ask a loved one or a close friend. Reflect on your character, interpersonal skills, and emotional intelligence. Embrace compliments from loved ones as affirmations of your worth. Recognising and appreciating your good qualities reinforces your self-worth and fosters a positive self-image.

My positive qualities are…

  1. Recognise Your Skills: Catalogue at least ten abilities you possess. From professional talents to hobbies, acknowledge your proficiency. Remember, expertise isn’t requisite; proficiency is enough. Recognizing your skills empowers you to leverage your strengths and pursue your passions with confidence.

Things I’m good at…

  1. Appreciate Your Body for what it does (not how it looks): Express gratitude for your body’s functionality. Consider its role in daily activities and emotional experiences. From physical capabilities to internal functions, cherish its resilience and ability to keep you alive and functioning on a daily basis. Appreciating your body fosters a sense of self-acceptance and promotes a positive body image.

I am grateful to my body for…

  1. Identify Your Passions: Identify interests that ignite joy and excitement. Revisit childhood passions and embrace activities that evoke fulfilment. Authenticity fosters self-esteem. Pursuing your passions nourishes your soul and reinforces your sense of purpose and fulfilment. If you’re unsure, try doing something new each week. Write down any experiences that you enjoy, and why you enjoy them (so you remember the feeling it gives!). How can you do more of these?

Things that light me up/make me feel good:

Nurture your self-esteem with these simple yet profound practices. You are worthy, capable, and deserving of happiness.

Remember, self-esteem is a journey, not a destination. Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you cultivate a positive self-image and embrace your inherent worth. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and prioritize self-care and self-compassion along the way.
